POKOTABI / Kikuichi
菊一
At Kikuichi in Nishi-Nippori, diners gather around dusk for motsuyaki skewers like tsukune, nankotsu, and tare-glazed shiro, paired with macaroni salad, spicy gatsu, and the house chuhai.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Savory smoke drifts up from the grill as cold glasses of chuhai are poured. Located in Nishi-Nippori 5-chome, Kikuichi is an unpretentious motsuyaki tavern where neighborhood locals and commuters heading home begin filling the seats around dusk.
The natural starting point is the selection of skewers, prized for their varied textures and sauces. The offerings include tender tsukune meatballs, pleasantly crunchy salted nankotsu cartilage, and skewers of shiro intestine or liver coated in a sweet-savory tare, each prepared to highlight its distinctive texture. While waiting for orders from the grill, snacking on small plates such as classic macaroni salad or spicy gatsu pork stomach is part of the established routine.
To accompany the meal, many regulars order the house-original chuhai. Its crisp, dry profile cuts cleanly through the richness of the offal, inviting another bite. Beer and shochu are also well accounted for, making it easy to match a favored drink with skewered meats and side dishes.
Business runs Monday through Friday from late afternoon until 22:00, with Saturdays and Sundays closed. Payment is cash only, so having bills and coins on hand ensures a smooth visit. Whether settling in at the counter or on the raised tatami seating, it offers a comfortable setting to enjoy grilled skewers and drinks on an ordinary weekday evening.
